DANU, in partnership with Ex Ante and Ex-Act Project consulting firms, has been selected to lead the revitalization and development strategy for the historic Diósgyőr Steelworks (DAM) site in Miskolc.
Once a cornerstone of Hungary’s industrial landscape, the Diósgyőr Steelworks was one of the country’s largest metallurgical complexes before its closure in 2009, after more than 200 years of operation. The Universitas Miskolcinensis Foundation, which manages the University of Miskolc, envisions a future where this vast site is transformed into a modern industrial hub, with spaces for diverse new uses as well.
DANU and its partners face a unique and exciting challenge of developing a masterplan for the 130-hectare area. Their task is to drive economic growth while preserving the site’s rich industrial heritage and ensuring seamless integration with the surrounding urban environment. This ambitious project involves a detailed assessment of the environmental and structural state of the site and its future development, resolving complex legal issues, and creating a cutting-edge 21st century complex of industry and technology that also serves the local community. The plan will also explore opportunities to leverage the currently existing manufacturing and companies at the site, as well as the University of Miskolc’s strengths in nanotechnology and raw materials research, positioning the area as a hub for related industries.
A unique aspect of this project is the site’s current fragmented ownership, with hundreds of different stakeholders. Unifying these interests to create a cohesive, industrially viable area will require careful planning, legal expertise, and strong collaboration with the city, the companies on site and local community.
